ABOUT ME
Firstly, a quick introduction from me. Hi, I'm Tom Clohosy Cole, a 36-year-old freelance illustrator living and working in Brighton and London. I studied Illustration at Kingston University and graduated in 2011. Over the years, I've worked extensively on children's picture books, with eight published titles, including the War Horse picture book in collaboration with author Michael Morpurgo. I have significant experience in book cover design for publishing houses, as well as in advertising and editorial illustration. Additionally, I work as an Art Director, Background/Concept Artist, and Storyboarder for animation studios such as BlinkInk and Nexus Productions.
My illustration work is hand-drawn in Photoshop or Procreate using a collection of custom brushes and textures I've developed over many years. I put particular emphasis on making my work feel hand-rendered and human. I use bold, rich colors to create imagery that grabs attention while also celebrating natural beauty and realism. I'm especially passionate about painting environments, building atmospheric worlds, and crafting scenes with drama and depth. Lighting and color are at the heart of my work, and I'm drawn to storytelling through composition and value.
I love painting skies and the natural world—it’s my biggest source of inspiration. When I’m not making artwork, I try to get out into nature as much as possible. The Lake District is one of my all-time favorite places; I can't get enough of the mountains and their ever-changing weather. Walking in the mountains, feeling small, and watching the shifting light over the landscape is something I find deeply awe-inspiring. If I could live there, I absolutely would!
I’m passionate about environmental conservation and believe in doing everything possible to protect our planet and the animals we share it with. I’m especially keen to collaborate with companies that share this sense of responsibility.
Beyond illustration, I’m a massive fan of Lord of the Rings and Studio Ghibli films—particularly Princess Mononoke. Years ago, I visited Japan and attended an exhibition of Ghibli animation frames, which was incredibly inspiring. I still flip through the book from the show all the time.
I also love to travel, be by the sea, play table tennis and badminton, enjoy a good board game, and, most of all, be a dad.
I’d love to hear from you, so please do get in touch!.
Thanks
